I hope I can show the actual characters soon, but since they haven’t been released yet, here are some sketches I did for the main character that were NOT accepted.
I’ve been working away on finishing up some books as well as doing some more graphic work for the Patent law books for Bob Fish. Hopefully I’ll be able to resolve this soon.
Going to be doing a few more comic strips as well as some more book illustrations over the next month.
I have done the covers for the two Ni Hao, Kai-lan books. I’m working on interior sketches for one and waiting word to proceed on another. Also just did one comic strip for a new Patent Beast series.
hoo-boy, been a while since i’ve updated the site, so here’s what’s been happening….
been working on colorizing some of the older patent beast strips for some new iterations of Bobs Book. He then asked me to make the graphics he had in the book match the artwork, so i redid all those.
also have started new strips for the patent beast series, and will have those to do over the coming months.
I also got a new Kai-lan project from Random House and just today got a second Kai-lan from Simon and Schuster. So all in all, life and work has been pretty busy. Maybe i can post some pics soon enough.
I just finished up a series of caricatures for a client, Fish and Associates. I’ll post here AND in the caricatures section on the Personal Artwork page. These will go up in the offices in a lineup still to be determined with the Patent Beast [..I believe....] in the center.
Finished up a major push for Patent Beast comics today. They’ve been picked up by two different places so there are two separate versions running right now. All told I’ve done nearly 60 in the last month or so.

I’ve recently started on a new series of comic strips along side the regular patent beast series featuring a fictional patent law firm BOMB- Berry, Older, Marvel and Bean, with all new characters. here are the sketches i did for the characters… and yeah, bean is a…. bean. He sits on a plate at the conference table with the others….
oh yeah… Mr Fish got a call the other day from another patent lawyer writing a book on patent law, and he wanted to use the strip in his book. The strip is definitely getting noticed, having been picked up by the Patently-O blog and is now being used for other works. I don’t know the name of the book or author as of yet, but the news is exciting since it means that the work is being acknowledged more widely.
Introducing Bob the Patent Beast Tamers wife:
I’ve been revisiting my digital camera, a Canon PowerShot S3 IS that I just did a firmware add-on to. The CHDK firmware add-on allows me to shoot in RAW format and a friend of mine who is a professional photographer has kind of inspired me to attempt to learn some more and utilize this medium. So I’ve been taking some macro photos around my studio and got some decent results. These include pics of the instructions I get for drawing the Patent Beast comic strip as well as one of the new characters I mentioned previously. Most are of objects I use daily here at the studio.
