In early 2023, one of the attorneys asked me to create a simple flowchart explaining the patent process for clients. I produced the requested diagram, but I also saw an opportunity to turn the information into something more engaging.
Inspired by the metro and subway maps I had seen while traveling, I redesigned the patent process as a large-scale “transit map” for one of the office walls. The main roadmap was printed as wallpaper, with each stage of the process treated like a station along the route.
To give the installation more dimension, I had wooden “station” pucks fabricated and painted red, commissioned custom plexiglass lettering, and had the explanatory text printed on plexiglass panels that were mounted over the wallpaper. For the final stop, “Issued Patent,” I added an actual patent booklet displayed in a wall-mounted holder beneath the label.
The finished installation became both an informational tool and a visual feature of the office. Clients frequently noticed the display and commented on it, and it helped turn what could have been a fairly dry procedural diagram into something much more memorable.
